“Proposal would bar California judges from Scout participation”: Bob Egelko of The San Francisco Chronicle has a news update that begins, “The state Supreme Court’s ethics advisory committee wants the court to prohibit California judges from membership in the Boy Scouts because the 2.7-million-member youth organization bars gays and lesbians from becoming troop leaders.”

“Closed caption win for CNN in lawsuit”: In today’s edition of The San Francisco Chronicle, Bob Egelko has an article that begins, “A federal appeals court set aside a ruling Wednesday that cleared the way for a civil rights suit against CNN for refusing to provide closed captioning for the deaf and hard-of-hearing in California on the thousands of news video clips it posts on its website.”

At the “Hollywood, Esq.” blog of The Hollywood Reporter, Eriq Gardner has a post titled “CNN Gets First Amendment Victory in Video Captioning Dispute; The 9th Circuit gives the cable news network relief from one discrimination claim but sets up a future showdown over the issue of whether websites are ‘places of public accommodation.’

At her “Trial Insider” blog, Pamela A. MacLean has a post titled “CNN’s Partial Victory in Closed Caption Fight.”

Kenneth Ofgang of Metropolitan News-Enterprise reports that “Ninth Circuit Panel Throws Out Part of Suit Against CNN Over Lack of Closed-Captioning.”

Yesterday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issued an opinion and order in this matter.

“Ala. chief justice jumps into gay marriage fight”: The Associated Press has a report that begins, “Alabama’s chief justice, known on the national stage for fighting to display the Ten Commandments in a judicial building, is jumping into the gay marriage debate with his push for a states-led constitutional amendment defining the institution as a union between one man and one woman.”

In “How Appealing” power outage-related news from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania: As philly.com reports, “The ice storm that struck the region Wednesday knocked out power to more than 600,000 PECO customers, the largest winter power outage in the utility’s history.”
