“Prosecutor: Northfield attorney fatally shot by brother-in-law with money woes.” Stefano Esposito and Matthew Hendrickson of The Chicago Sun-Times have an article that begins, “A Winnetka man gunned down his brother-in-law and tried to kill his sister during a confrontation at the couple’s home Monday night, a prosecutor said Thursday. John Gately III, 66, was ordered held without bail on charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of 72-year-old Stephen Shapiro of Northfield, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.”

Seventh Circuit becomes the first(?) federal appellate court to use the poop emoji in a published opinion: Circuit Judge Diane S. Sykes wrote yesterday’s ruling on behalf of a unanimous three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. You can access the emoji directly at this link.

The words “poop” and “emoji” don’t appear anywhere in the opinion, raising the question whether Westlaw, Lexis, and similar legal search engines will implement some method of searching for emojis in a judicial opinion.

“Attorney killed in Northfield domestic shooting, suspect in custody”: Luke Wilusz of The Chicago Sun-Times has an article that begins, “A partner at the Mayer Brown law firm was shot to death inside his north suburban Northfield home during a domestic incident Monday evening. Stephen Shapiro, 71, was shot to death about 7:19 p.m. inside his house in the 200 block of Latrobe Avenue in Northfield, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office and a statement from the village of Northfield.”

As the Sun-Times article goes on to explain, “Shapiro was a partner at the Mayer Brown law firm and was the founder and senior member of the firm’s Supreme Court and Appellate practice, according to the firm’s website.”

Lauren Victory of CBS2 Chicago reports that “Distinguished Attorney Stephen Shapiro Killed In Northfield Shooting; Suspect In Custody After Winnetka Standoff.”

And Diane Pathieu of ABC7 Chicago reports that “Attorney fatally shot at Northfield home; suspect in custody after Winnetka standoff.”
