Reuters reports here that President Bush is expected to make a statement about Justice O’Connor’s retirement at 11:15 a.m., but he is not expected to identify a nominee at that time.

Justice Sandra Day O’Connor has announced her retirement today from the Supreme Court of the United States: Gina Holland of The Associated Press provides this report. Given the dispositive role that Justice O’Connor’s vote has played in so many of the Court’s 5-4 rulings, a fierce battle over a successor is likely if the White House attempts to fill the vacancy with someone perceived as more conservative.

“State court affirms access to records”: The Seattle Times today contains an article that begins, “The state Supreme Court made it harder to seal documents in civil cases yesterday, ruling that a manufacturer of medical tests can’t shield records from the public without a compelling reason.”

“State high court sides with Times; P-I owner Hearst pledges to continue fight to keep JOA”: The Seattle Post-Intelligencer today contains an article that begins, “The Seattle Times Co. won a decisive legal victory in the city’s newspaper dispute yesterday, taking a key step toward ending a strained business relationship that the Seattle Post-Intelligencer’s owner calls essential to the P-I’s survival. But The Hearst Corp. said it will forge ahead with its broader suit, raising the possibility that the conflict could continue for years.”

The Seattle Times today contains articles headlined “Times wins key ruling in fight with rival P-I” and “Citizens committee suffers defeat.”

And The Los Angeles Times reports that “Ruling May End a 2-Paper Era; A Washington state high court decision could lead to the severing of an operating agreement and close one of Seattle’s journalistic rivals.”
