“Senate rejects high court pick”: Today’s edition of The Honolulu Star-Advertiser contains an article that begins, “Gov. Linda Lingle blasted the state Senate’s rejection of Katherine Leonard as chief justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court yesterday, calling the 14 lawmakers who voted against her nominee hypocritical. The 14-8 vote was the first time the Senate has turned down a governor’s chief justice nomination and the first time in 17 years that the senators rejected a gubernatorial appointment to the five-member Hawaii Supreme Court.”

Maura Dolan of The Los Angeles Times reports today that “Schwarzenegger, Brown urge resumption of gay marriages; In written arguments to the judge who overturned Proposition 8, the governor and attorney general say such weddings should be allowed during the appeals process.”

“Vander Plaats seeks to eject 3 justices”: The Des Moines Register today contains an article that begins, “The announcement Friday by Republican Bob Vander Plaats that he will campaign to oust Iowa Supreme Court justices who legalized gay marriage has likely launched a full-force battle that will funnel national money and attention to the state, activists on both sides said.”

And The Sioux City Journal reports today that “Vander Plaats vows to unseat justices.”

“Republicans block Bay Area judicial nominees”: Today in The San Francisco Chronicle, Bob Egelko has an article that begins, “Senate Republicans have blocked confirmation votes on two Bay Area judicial nominees, Goodwin Liu and Edward Chen, and returned the nominations to President Obama, who must decide whether to resubmit them when Congress returns from recess next month.”

“Nashville lawyer’s judicial nomination will go to Senate”: Today’s edition of The Tennessean contains an article that begins, “Nashville attorney Jane Stranch is finally headed toward confirmation as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th District — a year after she was nominated by President Barack Obama. The Senate agreed Thursday night, just before leaving for a one-month recess, to debate and vote on Stranch’s nomination on Sept. 13.”
