“Federal appeals court overturns convictions for two in Road Dog racketeering case”: Today’s edition of The Modesto Bee contains this article reporting on a ruling that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit issued yesterday.

Yesterday’s opinion begins, “We must decide whether an FBI investigation qualifies as an ‘official proceeding’ under a federal statute criminalizing obstruction of justice.” The opinion then proceeds to observe that “The facts of this case read like an episode of the fictional television drama Sons of Anarchy.”

“Michigan’s anti-begging statute cannot withstand facial attack because it prohibits a substantial amount of solicitation, an activity that the First Amendment protects, but allows other solicitation based on content.” A unanimous three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit issued this ruling today.

“NM ruling: Non-English speakers can be jurors.” The Associated Press has a report that begins, “The New Mexico Supreme Court is cautioning trial courts and lawyers in the heavily Hispanic state that citizens who don’t speak English have the right to serve on juries — a right enshrined in the state constitution even if people are non-English speakers.”
