In case you missed it, a similar use of the plural pronoun to describe a single person appeared in an article published in the February 12, 2018 issue of The New Yorker headlined “Is There a Smarter Way to Think About Sexual Assault on Campus? A team of researchers at Columbia believes that small changes to college life could make campuses safer,” by Jia Tolentino. The article introduced the usage by explaining (parehtheses in original), “(Sulkowicz, who has been working as an artist since graduation, identifies as non-binary, and uses the gender-neutral pronouns ‘they’ and ‘them.’)”
